TANGO ON THE EDGE PRACTICA NOTICE

 
Practica: A practice session for Tango Dancers
·        Thursday practica: Arts and Culture Centre 3rd Floor Mezzanine Gallery 8:30 – 10:30pm.     
·        Sunday Practica will take place at the Mmap Room,  Arts and Culture Centre  7 – 9 pm.
 Thank you Christine, for leading our focus on the rhythm of the waltz, and the possibilities for improvisation over the past several weeks. 
 
CLUB NEWS
 
General Meeting  third floor Gallery  of the Arts and Culture Centre, 7:00 pm, Thurs. Dec. 13
 
Christmas Milonga Dec 13, 7:30 pm -11:30 pm. Bring your own beverage and some finger foods/appetizers to share, as there is no kitchen. Tea and Coffee will be provided.
 
Sunday Practica, January 6th  will take place at Bally Haly Golf Course at the regular time, because the Arts and Culture Centre is booked for the Arts and Letters Competition. There will be no practica Dec. 23rd, 27th  or 30th.  Have a very merry Christmas with your family and loved ones.
 
Practica will take place in the 3rd floor Gallery Dec 20th, Jan. 3, and January 10. Our regular schedule will be in place for the remainder of the winter term.
 
Dance away the Winter Blues! We have booked Bally Haly for dinner and dancing Friday, Jan. 11th, 2013. Email Cecilia or Alison to book your table.

Please note, the Salsa Sundays will be taking a little break after Dec 9th. But don’t worry! We’ll keep you dancing with the Holiday Salsa on Fri Dec 14 and the New Year’s Salsa on Dec 31. Then Salsa Sunday @ Annexe XLounge returns every week starting January 13th.

ATTENTION: If you’re a salsa expert living or visiting here in St. John’s, NL (i.e. salsa instructor, salsa TA, or born and raised salsa/Latin dancing) and would like to take a turn leading our beginner’s salsa hour 6-7pm on Sundays, please let us know! We’ll be working on a rotating guest instructor schedule to start in January.

Starting THIS Sunday, Nov 25th!

This will be a trial run for a few weeks, still working on if we’ll have beginner’s lessons too.

There will be a door cost of $5 to cover the venue rental cost…please come check it out this Sunday and see why this is soooo worth the money!!!
(There may not be beginners lessons arranged yet, but hopefully lots of people will be around to practice with any novices that show up)

So it’s still an ALL WEEKEND Salsa weekend, with:
– MUN Spanish Society mixer Fri Nov 23 at UC Loft 5-8pm
– Latin Dance Boot Camp!! with Del & Corie @ Wild Lily Sat Nov 24 2-5pm, registratio still available when you arrive
– ROCKET SALSA $5 CBCF Fundraiser starting with Live Entertainment, Sat evening 7-11pm
– NEW AnnexeLounge Salsa Sundays 6pm-10pm (with a possibility to dance til 11pm), hosted by Judy D (for now)

Hi everyone, Corie & Del of Salsa Floreo just informed me that MexiCali Rosa’s in St. John’s NL has unexpectedly closed down its business. Bad news for our salsa scene because we were all enjoying Salsa Floreo’s Sunday Salsa Socials @ Mexi’s.

Sooooo the search for a regular salsa venue begins anew. If you have any venue ideas please contact us:

    BATTLE OF THE SHINES!

    WHEN: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2012

    2:00-3:00 RUEDA DE CASINO

    Rueda de Casino is a lively group salsa dance with origins in Cuba. Partners form a circle on the dance floor and a variety of dance moves are called out by a caller. The more moves that are called, the more dynamic the dance—with a series of quick partner switches and rapid travelling around the circle–so come out and learn a handful of the moves!

    3:00-4:00 BACHATA PATTERNS WITH GAEL

    Have you seen this guy dance? Smooooooth mooooooves. Join our special guest instructor Gael “Smooth Moves” Couchy as he hosts a session in sultry bachata patterns for your dancing pleasure.

    4:00-5:00 BATTLE OF THE SHINES

    Solo dancing segments within a shared social dance are your chance to SHINE! In the spirit of friendly competition, over the course of this hour long workshop Del will teach a shines pattern to the guys and Corie will teach one to the ladies. Then we’ll come together near the end of class to square off in a shines battle!

    WHERE: Wild Lily Dance Centre (156 Duckworth Street)

    COST: $15 for one workshop!
    $25 for two workshops!
    $35 for all three workshops!

    Spend the afternoon getting your Latin dance on at Wild Lily and then head over to the Rocket to dance the evening away!
    It’s gonna be a full-on Latin Dance kinda Saturday!

We’ll be dancing downstairs in the Rocket Restaurant’s “Orbit Room” to lots of high-energy classic salsa and merengue, with bachatta and reggaeton in the mix too! DJ Marcelo will be helping Judy D to keep the music HOT!

Cost: It’s a fundraiser in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Society – Atlantic Region. Minimum door cost $5…but feel free to donate more!

Bring along a little extra cash so you can buy yourself a delicious treat from the bakery…you may need the energy to keep up with the dancing 🙂

It’s an all-ages event, but if you’re over 19 there’s alcoholic drinks available as long as you purchase at least $5 of food with each drink … this is because of the type of restaurant liquor license Rocket has, we don’t want them to get in trouble!

Also, if you want to come out early you can catch live music from 7-8pm with Eren Bayaz.

Hailing from the warm coast of the Mediterranean, Eren was born with a musical gift not even his parents possess. Refusing to eat his dinner without the accompaniment of a radio, he grew up under the hands of various international music instructors in such genres as jazz, latin, spanish, and classical.

The Argentine Tango: Four Lessons for Couples with Edit Lopez

Come and learn the tango with Edit Lopez, visiting St. John’s from Argentina for four weeks only.

$100 per couple for 6 hours of tango instruction and practice, held over four Mondays evenings November 12-December 3, 7:30-9:00pm.

Instruction will be held at Holy Cross Junior High School, located at 7 Ricketts Road, St. John’s.
